This is the story of Sandra Grimes and her late co-author Jeanne Vertefeuille's personal involvement in the CIA's effort to identify the reason for the wholesale loss of its Soviet assets in 1985 and 1986.  In 1991 that road led them to hunt for a KGB spy in the CIA and to their identification of the "mole" as case officer Aldrich Ames, a long-time acquaintance and co-worker in the Soviet East European Division in the Directorate of Operations.  In February 1994 the FBI arrested Ames and two months later he pled guilty to espionage and was sentenced to life in prison.
