High-Powered Careers and Happy Families: Compatible or Not?

given by Bob & Donna Searby:

Donna and Bob Searby have been married for 44 years, with one daughter, six sons and, currently, ten grandchildren, ranging in age from 9 years to 6 months.  Bob studied for a BA, MA and Ph.D. in history and politics at several New York area colleges. He has had jobs as a soldier, college lecturer, writer/editor, diplomat, government senior executive and manager of European businesses for an American medical products corporation. Bob has traveled extensively in most areas of the world. President Reagan gave him the personal rank of Ambassador in 1984. Besides his foreign private-sector business job, he did work in the public policy fields of international trade, immigration, national security and various human rights issues, most especially Poland Solidarity. He served with the 101st Airborne Division in the Republic of South Vietnam.

Donna has been for fifteen years a board member and the executive manager of Longlea Conference Center, located near Culpepper, VA. She studied for her RN at Brooklyn Jewish Hospital and worked primarily at Sloan-Kettering Memorial Hospital in ICU Neurology, with a shorter stint at NYU Hospital. Donna pursued full-time homemaker at the birth of her third child. Today, they live in Northern Virginia and Bob works part-time teaching elective history courses at The Heights School in Potomac, Md.

Donna and Bob initially met in New York while Donna was between night shifts at Memorial Hospital and Bob was on military leave prior to overseas deployment. They married while on leave between the Asia deployment and an assignment in Germany. It made Grant and Kerr seem like an affair to forget.

Cost: $15/individual, $25/couple with pre-registration. Price increases to $20/individual, $35/couple at the door.
